We’ve all used products such as Google Maps and Streetview. Map data can be very useful and companies spend enormous amounts of money to map roads using expensive vehicles. Although consumers use these products for free, the data gets integrated into the websites and applications of many other businesses who pay to use this information. Gathering that data is expensive and time consuming when you have a small number of vehicles.
A more efficient and scalable approach is to have a specially made dashcam in thousands of vehicles like yours. Since you’re on the road already, you can help collect the imagery needed and, in turn, earn significant rewards. Because roads are mapped more frequently, more accurate and useful information is available for businesses who rely on this data.
Frequently Asked Questions:
How much does it cost?
There is no monetary cost to participate, just a little time and effort to get things set up and learn how the process works. By collecting roadway imagery you are providing value to the project and so you are rewarded for having the dashcam in place and uploading the data.
What is expected of me?
You should own and be comfortable with the basics of using a smartphone. Data is transferred from the camera to an app on your phone and then automatically uploaded to the internet.
You should have either: 1) access to high speed Wi-Fi every day or two, or 2) an unlimited data plan with good upload speed – even after using large amounts of data each month.
When do I receive rewards?
Rewards are sent each week (Typically starting on Thursday) for the driving data submitted during the previous week (Monday-Sunday).
Can I view the video from the camera?
Currently, the camera is only used to transmit imagery for the purpose of earning rewards. Improvements are made with each new release of hardware and software. When attempting to use the camera like a normal video recording device in the past, it had a negative impact on the amount of data that could be uploaded (and therefore affected the earnings received by drivers). We are hopeful that in the future it will be possible to view images from the camera, but for now consider it only as a means to earn rewards for your driving.
How long am I committed for?
You can stop at any time. We only ask that you send us back any hardware that we have supplied to you including the camera, mounts, chargers or any other equipment. If you only expect to be part of the fleet for a limited time, please let us know that when you make your request.
How much would I earn?
There are many factors that affect rewards, including: the region where you drive, the time of day that you drive, the demand for data from your region, how recently the roads you drove were previously mapped, etc. With all of that said, we expect you will feel participating is worth your time and effort.
Earnings paid by region are occasionally adjusted so that drivers who provide the most value are rewarded with the most rewards. So, for a variety of reasons, expect earnings to vary from week to week or month to month. Future rewards may go up or down significantly.
If you don’t feel the rewards are worth the effort, you can stop and send back the equipment. Remember, there is no cost to you to participate.
How do I receive rewards? Why do I get paid in cryptocurrency?
Cryptocurrencies are a modern way of transferring any amount of money quickly, digitally and inexpensively. Using a cryptocurrency is a convenient way for a project like this to efficiently make payments to many thousands of users.
The rewards are paid to drivers each week in the form of a cryptocurrency called Honey, directly to your Phantom Solana wallet (an app on your phone). Whenever you choose, you can convert that currency to US Dollars and transfer to your bank.
The conversion is typically done through an account at a centralized exchange, like Coinbase.com, Kraken.com or Crypto.com, but Robinhood recently added support for Solana, and more platforms are adding support for cryptocurrency, so you will likely have many more options available over time.
